Redhawks Win Five-Set Thriller Over Molloy

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – For the first time in seven years, the Roberts Wesleyan women's volleyball team defeated Molloy, following a 3-2 win on Saturday afternoon in the Voller Athletic Center.

The Redhawks had gone 10 straight matches without a win against the Lions dating back to Oct. 22, 2016. On Saturday, Roberts used a career-best day from outside hitter Sydney Yanak to lead the team to an East Coast Conference victory.

Yanak did it all for Roberts in the win. The Avon, Ohio native scored 27 points for the Redhawks with 22 kills on 42 attempts (.476%). Yanak also added five aces and 12 digs in the effort.

As a team, the Redhawks combined for a .267 hitting percentage which was their second-best hitting percentage in a match this season. Senior Laura Amaya had 11 kills and 4 block assists. Camryn Karelus had the best day of her collegiate career with 14 kills and 3 block assists.

Roberts dominated the first set, winning 25-15 but dropped the second and third sets (23-25, 21-25). After a fourth set win to regain the momentum, the Redhawks took the final set win 15-10.

In the final set, Roberts used a four-point run to take a 9-5 lead. Yanak had two kills in that run and Sarina Pasquantonio added an ace to give the Redhawks a cushion. Karelus added two kills late in the set to give Roberts a 14-10 lead. An attack error by Molloy ended the match.

Caleigh Schroeder had 46 assists in the match along with 11 digs. Teagan Weber led the team with 16 digs.

Roberts (5-9, 2-3 ECC) currently sit in fifth place in the wide open ECC standings. The team will be back on the court on Sunday at noon against Queens College.
