Redhawks Earn Road Win At Davenport

Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Senior Dan Doviak scored a career-high five goals as the Roberts Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team rode a dominant performance by its attack unit to a 17-14 victory over Davenport University in a non-conference game on Tuesday afternoon.
"I think this was a good game for us to get a win under our belt," Roberts coach Rocky Delfino said. "We've just got to take better care of the ball, that's the biggest thing."
Graduate student Reid Jackowski continued his blistering start to the season with four goals and five assists to take over the East Coast Conference lead in both points (24) and assists (16). Doviak, who is tied for the conference lead with 12 goals, finished five goals and an assist and sophomore Gunner MacMillan added four goals for Roberts (2-1).
"Their shot selection was good and they worked well off each other, especially when we moved the ball well," Delfino said.
The Redhawks raced to an early 5-0 lead in the first quarter as Doviak and Jackowski each scored twice and led 10-5 at the half. The Panthers scored six unanswered goals in less than 5:30 of the third quarter to even the game at 11, but Roberts responded with another 5-0 run to regain control.
Junior Jordon Deats scored an unassisted goal with 2:55 remaining in the third quarter to spark the spurt. Jackowski scored twice and Doviak and MacMillan added goals as Roberts took a 16-11 advantage while holding Davenport scoreless for an 11:20 span bridging the third and fourth quarters.
Deats, Ryan Prine and Brady Kustra each contributed a goal and an assist for the Redhawks. Ryan Zimmerman also scored while Curtis Denison and Matt Walsh added assists.
Junior long stick midfielder Luke Delavak led Roberts with 10 ground balls while Sam Keens added seven ground balls and Parker Bossard and Riley Schmeer both corralled five. Bossard also forced three turnovers.
Roberts held a 21-14 advantage in face-offs as Schmeer went 13-for-24 and freshman Isaac Marrero went 8-for-11. Sophomore Andy Davis made seven saves in goal for the Redhawks.
"It was all hands on deck," Delfino said. "This was a tough game and I think that it will help us down the road."
The Redhawks return to action at 1 p.m. Saturday for a non-conference game at Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, W.Va.
