BUFFALO, N.Y. – Freshman
Mackenzie Hagen scored her first collegiate goal in the 82
nd minute as the Roberts Wesleyan University women's soccer team defeated D'Youville 2-1 in an East Coast Conference match on Wednesday night.
Hagen's goal came after a restart as
Jenna Northup sent a free kick deep into the box. A D'Youville defender attempted to clear, but Roberts'
Emma Taylor headed the ball toward goal and Hagen finished the play with 8:08 remaining on the clock.
"She has been working hard throughout the season, so it was good for her to get the winning goal after all that she has been doing the past two months," Roberts coach
Jeff Vieira. "For her to do it in a big moment was extra special and we hope there are many more of those moments to come."
The win snapped a four-game losing streak and clinched a spot in the ECC playoffs for Roberts (5-7-1, 3-3 ECC).
"We needed to get a win and it was nice to do it tonight," Vieira said. "A win like this can give the players and the team a lot of confidence moving forward."
Junior
Larissa Johnston opened the scoring for Roberts, drilling a one-hopper into the far corner of the goal in the 22
nd minute. Hagen assisted on the play to pick up her first point as a Redhawk.
D'Youville tied the match on a penalty kick with 15:10 remaining in the second half.
Fifth-year keeper
Nicolette Knauf made three saves for the Redhawks.
The Redhawks will play their final home match of the regular season when they host ECC rival Molloy at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
