ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Graduate student
Malik Brooks scored a career-high 36 points, but the Roberts Wesleyan University men's basketball team was unable to overtake visiting Queens College in the second half, falling 94-86 in an East Coast Conference game Friday night at the Voller Athletic Center.
The Redhawks (4-6, 1-2 ECC) led 11 times early in the game, but Queens pulled in front 36-35 on a three-point basket by Shamar Chester with 3:10 remaining in the first half and never trailed again.
Roberts rallied several times in the second half, tying the game at 77 on a layup by
Nasir Hammonds with 4:56 to play, but the Knights outscored the Redhawks 17-9 the rest of the way.
Brooks, who is averaging an ECC-best 25.2 points per game, played 37 minutes and also contributed 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. The 6-3 guard, who was honored during a pregame ceremony for surpassing the 1,000-point plateau during Roberts' ECC opener at Mercy on Dec. 6, scored 23 points in the second half. He made 13 of 20 field-goal attempts and went 7-for-7 from the free-throw line.
Junior
Ryan Hudson added 11 points for the Redhawks and
Keonjay Carter scored nine.
Roberts will play Molloy at 4 p.m. Sunday in the VAC. The game is part of the Athletic Department's Pirate Toy Fund weekend and any fan who brings a new, unwrapped toy to the game will receive a free bag of popcorn.
