ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Trey Kleitz was in a zone on Sunday afternoon - the highlight zone.
Kleitz, a sophomore guard, made nine three-pointers and scored 22 of his career-high 30 points in the second half as the Roberts Wesleyan University men's basketball team overcame an 18-point first-half deficit and defeated Molloy 107-102 in an East Coast Conference game at the Voller Athletic Center.
"I kind of just blanked out as soon as I went in the game," said Kleitz, who went 9 of 13 from beyond the arc and 3-for-4 from the free-throw line to eclipse his previous career-high of 17 points set at Clarion on Nov. 13. "I kind of just let it fly and my teammates kept finding me."
Jermaine Taggart II scored a career-high 27 points for the Redhawks (5-6, 2-2 ECC), who played the final 34 minutes without leading scorer
Malik Brooks (23.0 ppg), who scored one point before leaving with an injury early in the first half.
Taggart scored four points in the final 17 seconds, including a clutch 13-foot jumper to give the Redhawks a 104-100 lead.
"We got some key stops down the stretch," said Roberts coach Mark Saladzius, whose team trailed 45-27 with 5:38 remaining in the first half. "We figured it out and we made enough plays on offense to save us today."
Sophomore
Keonjay Carter added a career-high 20 points and
Arnardo Camacho recorded a triple-double with 14 points, 12 rebounds,11Â assists and 4 steals.
Senior guard
Ryan Garwood chipped in with 11 points, but the man of the hour was Kleitz who made six treys in a 5:38 span, starting with 14:01 remaining in the game. He capped his afternoon with a four-point play, sinking a three while being fouled and converting the ensuing free throw with 3:47 left in the game.
"You ask guys to step up when someone comes out with an injury and he made the most of the opportunity," said Saladzius, who lauded Kleitz's effort on defense where he contributed four steals and several deflections.
Kleitz came within one three-pointer of tying the school record of 10 set by Marcus Gooding on Feb. 19, 2016 against New York Institute of Technology.
Taggart and Garwood both made three three-pointers for the Redhawks, who converted 17 of 35 (48.6%) from long range in the game.
The 107 points were the most scored by Roberts since Feb. 28 when the Redhawks defeated D'Youville 110-77.
Payton Shumpert, the son of former Syracuse University standout Preston Shumpert, led Molloy with 30 points.
The Redhawks will travel to Florida to compete in the Tampa Classic at the University of Tampa on Dec. 20 and 21.
