Heartbreaking Loss for Men’s Basketball in Florida

ST. PETERSBURG, FL – Senior Jermaine Taggart II sank a fade-away jumper on the edge of the lane to give the Roberts Wesleyan University Men's Basketball team a 93-91 lead with less than 10 seconds remaining but a 3-pointer with under a second to play for Eckerd College gave the Tritons a slim 94-93 win Saturday in the second game of the holiday Florida trip for the Redhawks.

Sophomore Nasir Hammonds drained a 3-pointer with a minute to play to give Roberts (5-8) a 91-89 lead.

Eckerd (7-6) had a pair of shots in the ensuing possession but a missed shot and a blocked shot by junior Arnardo Camacho paused the possession but a foul on Camacho after the rebound sent the Tritons to the free throw line and Camacho to the bench with his fifth foul.

After tying the game with the two free throws, Roberts ran the clock down to 10 seconds and Taggart's jumper gave the Redhawks the late lead.

Roberts had an early lead in the game 14-8 but Eckerd battled back to take a first-half advantage. A trio of 3-pointers in the closing minutes of the first half gave the Redhawks a 35-31 lead at the halftime break.

The Tritons surged ahead in the second half before Roberts took the lead with a minute to play.

Camacho finished with a team-leading 22 points and had team highs of five rebounds and nine assists. Taggart finished with 17 points while senior Ryan Garwood added 15 and sophomore Trey Kleitz chipped in 14 points with four 3-pointers. Hammonds was the fifth Redhawk to reach double figures with 13 points.

The Redhawks connected on 14-of-25 (56 %) from 3-points range in the game.

Roberts will return to action January 8 at Felician University and host the College of Staten Island in East Coast Conference (ECC) action January 15.
