Milestone Night Marred by Buzzer Beater Loss

DOBBS FERRY, NY – Graduate student Malik Brooks scored his 1,000th career point at Roberts Wesleyan and finished with 32 points to tie his career-high scoring effort but a 16-foot jumper at the buzzer gave Mercy University an 84-83 win Friday night in the first East Coast Conference (ECC) game of the season.

Brooks needed six points to reach the milestone with five minutes remaining but connected on a pair of layups to close within a basket of the milestone. With 2:24 remaining, Brooks was fouled on a drive to the basket and calmly hit both free throws to reach the 1,000-point mark in his three seasons for the Redhawks.

With time running out, junior Arnardo Camacho forced a turnover and senior Ryan Garwood picked up the loose ball. Brooks capped the play with another driving layup to give Roberts an 83-82 lead. Brooks missed a free throw that would have completed the three-point play and Mercy moved up the court and called time out with two seconds remaining

The Maverick inbounds pass went to the corner of the court and a shot from inside the 3-point line was made as time expired to give Mercy its first win of the season.

Brooks led Roberts with 32 points, senior Jermaine Taggart II and sophomore Keonjay Carter each scored 10. Camacho finished with nine points and a team-leading 14 rebounds and five steals.

The Redhawks continue the ECC road trip with a Sunday afternoon game at St. Thomas Aquinas.
