Strong Second Half Leads Men’s Basketball to Key Win

SPARKILL, NY – Graduate student Malik Brooks scored a career-high 34 points including 23 in the second half as the Roberts Wesleyan University Men's Basketball team downed St. Thomas Aquinas College on the road for the first time since 2014 with a 91-81 victory Sunday in East Coast Conference (ECC) play on the road.

STAC (5-4 overall, 0-1 ECC) built a first half lead of 42-38 with a late rally but Roberts (4-5, 1-1 ECC) used a 9-0 run that was capped by a Brooks 3-pointer five minutes into the second half to surge ahead to gain an eight-point lead at 63-55 with 14:18 to play.

The Spartans battled back and tied the game at 68-68 at the 9:20 mark before junior Arnardo Camacho, sophomore Keonjay Carter and fellow sophomore Trey Kleitz hit eight consecutive free throws for a six-point Roberts edge.

Senior Ryan Garwood buried a 3-pointer to run the lead to nine at 79-70 with less than six minutes to play and the Redhawks hit 8-of-10 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

The last Roberts win in Sparkill came near the end of the 2013-14 season and the win Sunday snapped an 11-game losing streak on the road in the series.

Brooks led all scorers with 34 points on 11-of-19 shooting from the field and 10-for-12 from the free throw line. Garwood added 21 points with three 3-pointers, senior Jermaine Taggart II added 14 points and Camacho finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and team bests with six assists and six steals. Carter scored eight points and led the squad with nine rebounds.

The Redhawks return home to face Queens College Friday and Molloy University Sunday in home ECC games.
