Box Score CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Roberts Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team used a fast start to fuel at 17-13 non-conference victory over American International College at the Cortland Classic on Friday afternoon.
The Redhawks (5-3) scored four goals in the first 9:16 while building a 6-2 lead after the first quarter. The scoring spurt was highlighted by two goals in seven seconds as Isaac Marrero won a faceoff and scored his first goal as a Redhawk with 5:44 remaining in the first. Marrerro's goal came directly after senior Jordon Deats had given Roberts a 3-0 lead.
Junior Gunner MacMillan led the Redhawks with five goals and two assists and Deats finished with four goals. Freshman Preston Steve scored a career-high three goals and senior attack Dan Doviak added two goals and two assists.
Freshman Colton Ugine contributed a goal and two assists, senior Matt Walsh added a goal and an assist and junior Tyler Clark registered two assists as the Redhawks won their second straight game.
Marrero won 15 of 24 face-offs and led Roberts with seven ground balls.
The Redhawks man-down unit was stout, allowing only two goals in nine man-up situations for AIC. Sophomore Garrett Kayser made 13 saves and junior Parker Bossard snared six ground balls and caused two turnovers.
The Redhawks will conclude play in the Cortland Classic against Saint Michael's College at 11 a.m. on Sunday at Cortland High School.
