Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – The Roberts Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team only led once on Saturday afternoon, but it was when it mattered most.
Preston Steve scored his fourth goal of the game off an assist from
Jacob Zimmerman with 4:28 to play as the Redhawks overcame two four-goal deficits in the second half to defeat Molloy 17-16 in an East Coast Conference game.
"It was a battle," said Roberts coach
Rocky Delfino, who earned his first career victory at the Rockville Centre Sports Complex. "I must have said the word composure about 57 times today, but we kept our composure."
Roberts trailed 16-14 with six minutes to play, but
Gunner MacMillan and
Luke Delavak scored goals nine seconds apart from each other to set the stage for Steve's heroics. The freshman delivered with a pinpoint shot from the slot.
"He's amazing," Delfino said. "He's not afraid to go to the goal, his first step is really quick, he's elusive and he's got a good shot."
Steve and senior
Dan Doviak each contributed four goals and an assist for the Redhawks (8-5, 2-2 ECC). MacMillan finished with four goals and
Jordon Deats added two goals and three assists. Delavak,
Ethan Brown and
Matt Walsh each added a goal for Roberts.
Sophomore
Isaac Marrero won 18 of 35 face-offs and led Roberts with seven ground balls while
Garrett Kayser made eight saves.
Injuries forced the Redhawks to reshuffle their lineup a bit and Delfino was proud of the resiliency that his team displayed.
"It shows that they have composure and that they stayed on task," he said. "We put some guys in and they just played."
Roberts will travel to the University of the District of Columbia for an ECC game at 1 p.m. on April 20.
