ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Roberts Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team enjoyed a record-setting afternoon on Senior Day.
The Redhawks scored nine goals in the first quarter and rolled to a 20-5 victory over Saint Thomas Aquinas College after honoring seniors
Parker Bossard,
Jordon Deats,
Luke Delavak,
Dan Doviak,
Riley Schmeer and
Matt Walsh in a pregame ceremony.
Junior
Gunner MacMillan also established a single-season record by scoring his 62
nd goal as Roberts secured a spot in the East Coast Conference Championship. The Redhawks (10-5, 4-2 ECC) earned the third seed in the postseason tournament and are tentatively scheduled to travel to No. 2 Frostburg State at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
"Senior Day is always great, but it's also sad," Roberts head coach
Rocky Delfino said. "You are saying goodbye to some great kids who have accomplished so much, so you want to say 'good job.'  … You are also sad because you are going to miss them. You are going to miss them around campus, you are going to miss them at practice and you are going to miss them on the game field, so it isn't easy."
After surrendering the first goal of the game, Roberts went on a 6-0 run to gain control of the game. MacMillan scored seven goals and added two assists to lead the offense while Doviak contributed six goals and two assists and Deats registered five goals and two assists.
MacMillan scored four goals in the first half as Roberts built a 12-5 lead at the break. He tallied a man-up goal with 13:30 to play in the fourth quarter to equal the mark of 61 set by Hunter Lemieux in 2022 and converted a feed from Doviak to break it just over two minutes later.
"It's really my teammates who I need to thank," MacMillan said. "As a crease player my job is to get open and put the ball away and they do an amazing job of getting me the ball."
Tyler Clark added two goals and
Justin Skelly, Walsh and
Colton Ugine also scored for Roberts.
Schmeer, who suffered a serious knee injury last year, won 16 of 22 face-offs and led the Redhawks with eight ground balls.
"It was special to be out there on this field one more time," Schmeer said.
Delavak, who contributed three ground balls and two caused turnovers from his longstick midfield position, agreed.
"It was awesome," Delavak said. "I will always be close to these guys, no matter what. After all of the highs and lows that we've experienced to come out and play together one more time on this field was awesome."
The Redhawks, who have won 29 games over the past three seasons, have earned the right to play at least one more game. Frostburg (12-3, 5-1 ECC) has won three straight against the Redhawks, including a victory in the ECC semifinals last spring.
"We've just got to play together," Delfino said. "We've got to stay together as a team, get on some runs, answer their runs and not get too high or too low."
