ROCHESTER, NY – The Roberts Wesleyan Field Hockey team played its first game at home Saturday and despite winning the shots and penalty corner stats totals, the Redhawks dropped a narrow 1-0 decision to Lycoming College on the Turf Field.
After a scoreless first half with each team having opportunities to score, the Warriors (3-2) had the offensive advantage in the third quarter. Lycoming had a pair of early shots with one coming from point-blank range but sophomore goalkeeper Avery Richardson made both saves to keep the game tied at 0-0.
Two minutes later, the Warrior had another offensive rush and this one ended with a crossing pass through the mouth of the goal that was redirected into the goal for the only goal of the game.
Roberts (0-4) battled back and increased the offensive pressure but could not find the back of the net.
The Redhawks had one last chance with a penalty corner with 31.4 second remaining but a shot by junior Justine Laverty was stopped by the Lycoming goalkeeper to secure the win.
Richardson finished with six saves while Lycoming's Isabelle Bobe was credited with seven stops. Roberts held a 12-9 edge in shots and a 6-3 advantage in penalty corners for the game.
The Redhawks return to action at 7 p.m. Friday night with another home game against Bloomsburg University.
