ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Roberts Wesleyan University women's soccer team spent a portion of Friday's training session working on 1-on-1 drills.
That practice paid off on Saturday afternoon as junior
Ella White corralled a loose ball and eluded two defenders near the top of the box to create space before scoring the only goal of the match in a 1-0 victory over East Coast Conference rival College of Staten Island on Homecoming Weekend.
"Ella got the ball at her feet and dribbled through two or three players and got the shot off," Roberts coach
Jeff Vieira said. "You like it when the things that you work on in session come out in a match and I am proud of her for getting that tally because she has been working hard every session for us."
The goal came in the 39
th minute and was White's second of the season.
"Yesterday we worked on 1v1 drills and today I scored off a 1v1 in the game," White said. "All of the drills that Jeff has us do are meant to gear us up for game day."
Roberts (4-3-1, 2-0 ECC) got off to a quick start, outshooting CSI Â 11-4 in the first half. The Redhawks held an 18-8 advantage in shots for the game. Freshman
Mia Tyndell made four saves for her second shutout of the season.
"I like that we kind of controlled the match, especially at the beginning of the first half," Vieira said. "I also like that they put in the work and we didn't give up anything at the end. It kind of turned into a workman's effort at the end because of the rain and the soft surface, so I am proud of them for grinding it out."
The Redhawks, who won the 2023 ECC regular season championship, will play their final five regular-season conference games in October. The Redhawks will travel to Daemen for an ECC matchup at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
"If we just continue to work on the basics, we can continue to build up for bigger things that lie ahead," White said.
"We just have to build on everything day by day," Vieira added. "We have to win the day. We have tomorrow off, we will try to win Monday in anticipation for our next match which is Wednesday. We are trying to win every day in training."
