MILLERSVILLE, PA – Senior Sydney Yanak recorded a career-high 24 kills and fellow senior Teagan Weber equaled her career high with 27 digs to lead the Roberts Wesleyan Women's Volleyball team to a 3-1 win over California (PA) Friday on the first day of competition at the Marauder Clash at Millersville University.
Roberts (2-0) added a 3-2 win over Wilmington University to finish the first day with a pair of wins.
The Redhawks won the season-opener for the first time since 2014 with the exception of a win over D'Youville in the Covid-19 shortened season when Roberts played jus four matches.
Against California, Roberts won the opening set 25-23 but the Vulcans (0-1) answered with a 25-17 in the second set to even the match. In the third set, the Redhawks rallied late for a 26-24 win and then ran away with a 25-24 win in the fourth set for the victory.
Yanak finished with 24 kills and 13 digs with a .346 attack percentage. Weber tied her career best defensive effort with 27 digs and junior Caleigh Schroeder had 52 assists.
Junior Olivia Price finished with 15 kills and nine digs while sisters Camryn Karelus and Jaycee Karelus had nine kills each.
Against Wilmington, Roberts won the opening set 25-16 but dropped the second 23-25 before taking a 2-1 edge with a 25-17 win in the third set. The Redhawks had a late match point in the fourth set but fell 27-25 to force the fifth set. Roberts jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 15-8 win to cap the undefeated day.
Schroeder had another great performance with a near triple-double with 53 assists, nine kills and 11 digs. Yanak had her second double-double of the day with 16 kills and 14 digs, Price added 19 kills and Weber led the defense with 24 digs.
Roberts will wrap up play at the Marauder Clash Saturday with matches against host Millersville (11 a.m.) and the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown (3 p.m.)
