ROCKVILLE CENTER, NY – A goal in the second quarter by freshman Peyton Ayer for the Roberts Wesleyan Field Hockey team tied the score at 1-1 but Molloy University scored a goal off a penalty corner late in the game to escape with a 2-1 victory Sunday afternoon.
Molloy (1-0) opened the scoring late in the first quarter with a penalty corner but the Redhawks (0-2) battled back to tie the score five minutes into the second period.
Roberts had a penalty corner play that eventually had the ball end up on the stick of Ayer in close. Her shot was saved by the Lions goalie but Ayer picked up the rebound and knocked in the game-tying goal.
The score remained tied until late in the final quarter when Molloy broke free on another penalty corner and scored to earn the victory.
"We went into the game determined not to be outworked," said Head Coach Marissa Kocher. "While the score didn't go our way, there are so many adjustments that we have made and continue to make. This team is hungrier than ever."
Roberts was outshot 21-5 as Molloy held a 15-4 edge in shots on goal and a 14-2 advantage in penalty corners.
Sophomore Avery Richardson made 13 saves in the Redhawks goal. Richardson has six consecutive games with double-digit saves dating back to the end of the 2023 season.
Roberts will play at 7 p.m. Wednesday at D'Youville University before playing its home opener Saturday against Lycoming College with a 1 p.m. game on the turf field.
