Carter’s 3-Pointer is the Game Winner Against Staten Island

ROCHESTER, NY – Sophomore Keonjay Carter hit a 3-pointer from the corner with 2.8 seconds remaining to give the Roberts Wesleyan University Men's Basketball team a come-for-behind 93-90 victory over the College of Staten Island Wednesday night in an East Coast Conference (ECC) game and the first home game of the second semester.

The win for Roberts (6-9 overall, 3-2 ECC) snapped a season-high three-game losing streak and came after the Redhawks trailed by as many as 13 points in the second half.

Carter finished with 18 points including five 3-pointers.

The winning shot came as Roberts had possession under its own basket with 12 seconds remaining and the score tied at 90-90. Graduate student Malik Brooks took the in-bounds pass and dribbled up the court before driving past one defender and into the lane before a pair of Dolphin defenders converged.

Brooks dished off a pass to Carter in the corner and he hit the winning 3-pointer.

Brooks finished with 20 points including 18 in the second half as he and senior Jermaine Taggart II who led the Redhawks with 24 points led the comeback run.

Taggart hit a shot with 5:30 remaining to give Roberts its first lead since the opening minutes of the game at 79-78.

Staten Island (7-11, 3-3 ECC) rallied to regain a five point advantage but Brooks nailed a 3-pointer to trim the lead and Taggert followed with a driving layup to tie the score at 84-84.

After the Dolphins regained the lead, Brooks hit back-to-back shots and then a pair of free throws to out the Redhawks up four at 90-86.

Staten Island pressure defense allowed the Dolphins to tie the game with a pair of layups before the 12-second mark that started the final play for Roberts.

Roberts returns to action on the road at the University of the District of Columbia Saturday and will play at D'Youville next Wednesday night.
