WASHINGTON, DC – Graduate student Malik Brooks scored 29 points and junior Arnardo Camacho grabbed 15 rebounds to lead the Roberts Wesleyan University Men's Basketball team to a 77-70 road win over the University of the District of Columbia in an East Coast Conference (ECC) game Saturday.
Roberts (7-9 overall, 4-2 ECC) trailed 37-34 at halftime but used strong defense in the second half to pull away for the win.
Brooks scored 17 of his team-leading 29 points in the second half on the strength of 6-of-8 free throw shooting.
District of Columbia (3-11, 1-5 ECC) cut the Redhawks lead to five points with a pair of free throws with four minute remaining but a Brooks answered with a layup at the other end and after another layup by sophomore Nasir Hammonds, Brooks extended the lead with a long 3-pointer as Roberts took a 12-point lead at 71-59 wit two minutes left to play.
Brooks added four free throws and Camacho hit a pair of free throws as the Redhawks were a perfect 6-for-6 down the stretch to seal the victory.
Brooks led the way with 29 points, senior Jermaine Taggart II added 14 points, senior Ryan Garwood scored 11 points with three 3-pointers and junior Ryan Hudson chipped in 10 points for Roberts.
Camacho had game-highs with 15 rebounds and seven assists.
The Redhawks play Wednesday at D'Youville and return home next Saturday for the annual Golisano Children's Hospital fundraising event against Daemen in the Voller Athletic Center.
