Men’s Basketball Falls to Nationally-Ranked Daemen

ROCHESTER, NY – Junior Arnardo Camacho scored 22 points and senior Jermaine Taggart II added 21 points for the Roberts Wesleyan University Men's Basketball team but it was not enough against the nationally-ranked Daemen University squad that took an early lead and posted a 98-75 win in an East Coast Conference (ECC) matchup Saturday afternoon in the Voller Athletic Center.

Daemen (17-0 overall, 8-0 ECC), ranked No. 2 in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) poll and No. 3 in the D2 College Sports Communicators (D2CSC) Media Poll, took an early lead scoring in the first 14 points of the game and led by 20 points at the midpoint of the first half. Roberts (7-11, 4-4 ECC) rallied to keep the score at or near a 20-point margin for the remainder of the contest. The Wildcats led 56-32 at halftime.

Daemen led by as many as 30 points in the second half with 12:45 remaining but Taggart hit a pair of baskets including a 3-pointer to trim the lead. A pair of 3-pointers by sophomore Trey Kleitz cut the led to less than 20 at 76-57 with 11:16 left to play.

Camacho hit a pair of free throws with less than eight minutes to play and started a streak of 15 consecutive points by eight Camacho or Taggart as the Redhawks kept the lead at or near 20 points but Daemen scored seven of the final eight points of the game for the final score.

Camacho added team highs with six rebounds, seven assists and was tied for the team lead with Kleitz with three steals. Kleitz and senior Ryan Garwood each scored six points for Roberts.

The Redhawks return to action with a pair of home ECC games against Mercy Friday which has been designated as Alumni Night and against St. Thomas Aquinas Sunday as the Redhawks honor the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) organization.
