SPARKILL, NY – Senior Kara Choate assisted on one goal and scored another in the first half as the Roberts Wesleyan University Women's Soccer team raced to an early lead Saturday and the Redhawks held on for a 3-2 road victory over St. Thomas Aquinas College to clinch at least a top-four finish in the East Coast Conference (ECC) standings to ensure the team will have a home game in the ECC Tournament.
Roberts (7-3-4 overall, 3-2-1 ECC) earned its 11th point in the standings to secure at least a top-four finish. The top two teams receive a bye in the first round of the tournament and the third and fourth place teams host first-round games in the tournament.
Senior Emma Taylor opened the scoring with an assist from fellow senior Cami Brescia 9:27 into the contest. Junior Jenna Northup doubled the lead at the 30:14 mark as Choate set up the goal for the assist.
St. Thomas Aquinas (1-10-3, 1-5-1 ECC) scored 32 seconds later to cut the lead to 2-1 but Choate scored on a pass from Brescia with 2:12 left in the opening half as Roberts regained the two-goal lead.
Roberts controlled the majority of play in the second half with a 9-3 edge in shots and a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks over the final 45 minutes but STAC managed to score with 11 minutes remaining to trim the lead to a single goal.
The Redhawks will finish the ECC schedule next weekend with a trip to Queens College to determine the final tournament positioning and schedule.
