FLUSHING, NY – Senior Alyssa Hackett picked up a loose ball in the penalty area and nailed the only goal of the game as the Roberts Wesleyan University Women's Soccer team scored a 1-0 win over Queens College Saturday and earned the No. 3 position in the final East Coast Conference (ECC) standings and will host a first-round tournament match.
Roberts (8-3-4 overall, 4-1-2 ECC) won for the third straight game and are now unbeaten in the last seven matches. The Redhawks will host No. 6 D'Youville while, No. 4 Daemen University will host No.5 Queens Thursday in first round matches.
In the win over Queens (2-8-6, 1-3-3 ECC), the first half was scoreless but Hackett broke the tie early in the second half.
Sophomore Ileana Cheruiyot took a throw-in from near midfield and fellow sophomore Mackenzie Hagen tapped a ball back to junior Adria Ariola who chipped a long pass into the 18-yard box for Hackett.
A Queens defender had a chance to clear the ball but misplayed the ball and Hackett took advantage of the loose ball and knocked in a shot from the edge of the box for the eventual game-winning goal.
Roberts continued to play tough defense the rest of the match to secure the third shutout win in the last four matches.
Sophomore Mia Tyndell finished with two official saves for her fourth shutout of the season.
Roberts will host D'Youville at 6 p.m. Thursday in the first round of the ECC Tournament.
