Defense Shines as Women’s Soccer Wins the ECC Title

DOBBS FERRY, NY – Sophomore goalkeeper Mia Tyndell made 10 saves and had help from the defense with a pair of defensive saves as the Roberts Wesleyan University Women's Soccer team recorded its third shutout in the last four games to claim the East Coast Conference (ECC) Championship with a 1-0 win at Mercy University Sunday afternoon.

The victory for Roberts (11-3-4) earned the team a trip to the NCAA Division II Tournament with the automatic bid. The Redhawks will learn their opponent and the location of the first-round game at the official NCAA Selection Show at 6:30 p.m. Monday night.

"The defense today was great," said Head Coach Bobby McColl in his first season after returning to the helm of the Roberts Women's Soccer program. "Mia (Tyndell) just keeps getting better and better and has been really good over the last several games."

Tyndell was not alone in her defensive efforts as sophomore back Ileana Cheruiyot was assigned to cover the top scorer from Mercy – senior Ancksu Dixon.

"Ileana was phenomenal today," said McColl. "She had a tough assignment and stepped up time after time. It was really the entire defense that played great today."

Roberts took the 1-0 lead in the 17th minute as senior Larissa Johnson lined up a direct kick from the side of the penalty area and sent a pass over the head of the Mercy (14-3-2) goalie who had the ball deflect off her hands.

The ball landed at the feet of junior Jenna Northup who redirected the ball into the back of the net.

Northup, who scored goals in each of the three ECC Tournament games for Roberts, was named the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

Roberts maintained the 1-0 lead through the first half but needed to play against a stiff wind in the second half that started with rain showers and finished with snow falling from the sky.

In the second half, Mercy had a pair of great scoring chances but the Roberts defense came through to preserve the shutout victory.

The win also extends the unbeaten streak to 10 games (7-0-3) with the last loss for the Redhawks coming back on October 1.

The opponent, date and time for the NCAA Tournament game will be announced Monday night.
