ROCHESTER, NY – Sophomore Kaidan Krchniak capped a five-set come-from-behind victory for the Roberts Wesleyan University Men's Volleyball team with a pair of aces in the final three points of a dramatic 15-11 win in the fifth set to clinch a 3-2 win over Rockhurst University Friday night in the Voller Athletic Center.
Rockhurst (6-6) came out strong and won the first two sets 25-16 and 25-22 with strong play at the net but Roberts (6-5) rallied for a 25-23 win in the third set and added a thrilling 25-22 win in the fourth to force the fifth set tie-breaker.
In the fifth set with the scored tied at 11-11, sophomore Paul Fillion recorded a kill from the middle of the offense. After an attack error against Rockhurst, Krchniak converted back-to-back aces to give the Redhawks a 14-11 edge and the match ended with an error against Rockhurst with contact with the net.
In the third set, Roberts used a pair of Rockhurst serving errors to gain a lead and Fillion added an ace followed by a kill for freshman Patrick Bodecker before another service error for Rockhurst ended the set.
In the fourth set, it was sophomore Griffin Monrad and freshman Ryan DeJohn who recorded late kills to seal the set win and force the tie-breaker set.
Monrad and DeJohn each registered a team-leading 13 kills and DeJohn added eight digs. Freshman Landon Brouwer handed out 37 assists and added eight digs. Junior Moises Jimenez led the defense with nine digs and Krchniak finished with six kills and three aces. Fillion finished with eight kills while Bodecker chipped in seven kills.
Roberts is off until February 18 when the team travels to Virginia for matches at George Mason University and Marymount University (Feb. 19) before opening East Coast Conference play Feb. 22 at St. Thomas Aquinas.
