Early Lead Slips Away Against Thomas More

ROCHESTER, NY – Sophomore Paul Fillion tied his career-high with 18 kills and freshman Landon Brouwer hit a season and career-high with 55 assists as the Roberts Wesleyan University Men's Volleyball team built an early 2-0 lead but Thomas More University rebounded to win the next two sets and then rallied late to win the fifth set for a 3-2 win over the Redhawks Thursday night in the Voller Athletic Center.

Roberts (7-14 overall) took the first two sets by scores of 25-21 and 25-17. Thomas More (5-9) rallied late in the third set for a 6-2 run to take a 24-20 lead. After an attack error on the Saints allowed Roberts to close the gap, a kill ended the set and Thomas More avoided the sweep.

The Saints took an early 11-6 lead in the fourth set but the Redhawks put together a 7-1 run to knot the score at 14-14. Thomas More answered with three of the next four points to regain the lead and held off a late Roberts rally for the 25-23 set win to force the fifth set.

Thomas More took another early lead at 6-2 before another Roberts 7-1 run to give the Redhawks a 9-7 lead. The teams traded points but at 12-12, the Saints scored the final three points for the set and match victory.

Fillion led four players into double-digit kill totals with his 18 as freshman Ryan DeJohn added 15 and junior Noah Liousfi and sophomore Griffin Monrad each registered 13 kills. Junior Moises Jimenez had a career-high 20 digs while Brouwer added his career-best 55 assists and chipped in 12 digs for a double-double.

The Redhawks hit the road for a pair of matches Saturday in Pennsylvania against Saint Francis University and Saint Vincent College.
