LATROBE, PA – Sophomore Paul Fillion had 16 kills and classmate Griffin Monrad added 11 kills and two key aces to lead the Roberts Wesleyan University Men's Volleyball team to a 3-1 win at Saint Vincent College Saturday to salvage a Pennsylvania split on a long Saturday.
The day started with a 3-0 loss at Saint Francis as the Redhawks lost by set scores of 25-19, 25-22 and 25-17. The team then traveled an hour west to Latrobe for an evening match at Saint Vincent.
Roberts (8-15) opened with a pair of 25-23 wins to take a 2-0 lead. The Bearcats won the third set 25-23 to cut the lead in half.
In the fourth set, the teams battled back and forth and Roberts had nine match points before finally finishing the match with a 34-32 victory. The Bearcats took a 32-31 lead late before a service error tied the score at 32-32.
Monrad went to the service line and delivered back-to-back aces to end the long set and win the match to end a long day for the Redhawks on a positive note.
Head coach Mike Dedee had a thin bench in the second match with only four subs for the match.
Fillion led Roberts with 16 kills and added nine digs. Monrad added 10 kills, a .350 attack percentage and the two big aces to close out the match. Freshman Landon Brouwer had 41 assists and 10 digs for a double-double while fellow freshman Ryan DeJohn had nine kills and a team-leading 14 digs. Sophomore Kaidan Krchniak and freshman Liam O'Keefe added 12 digs each. Fillion and Brouwer added four blocks each for the Redhawks.
The team will play at D'Youville Monday and take an extended break before returning to East Coast Conference (ECC) play March 28 at Dominican.
