BUFFALO, NY – A season-high 23 kills for freshman Ryan DeJohn and 47 assists for fellow freshman Landon Brouwer was not enough for the Roberts Wesleyan University Men's Volleyball team Monday night as the Redhawks dropped a tough 3-2 decision to D'Youville University.
The Saints (5-8) won the first set 25-19 but Roberts (8-16) answered with a 25-19 win to knot the score at 1-1. D'Youville came from behind to win an extended 30-28 third set to regain the lead before the Redhawks tied the score again with another 25-19 win in the fourth set.
The teams traded points early in the fifth set but the Saints went on a 5-0 run in the middle of the set to take a 9-4 advantage. A DeJohn kill ended the run but D'Youville score two more points to push the lead to 11-5.
Roberts rallied for four straight points to trim the lead to two points at 11-9 but three errors by the Redhawks allowed the Saints to reach match point at 14-9. The Saints committed a pair of attack errors as Roberts cut the lead to 14-11 but a final point for D'Youville ended the match.
DeJohn led all players with 23 kills and a .326 attack percentage. Brouwer had 47 assists and three aces while junior Moises Jimenez led the defense with 11 digs. Sophomores Paul Fillion had 12 kills and Griffin Monrad added five aces for the Redhawks.
Roberts will have an 11-day break before returning to action March 28 at Dominican for an ECC contest.
