ORANGEBURG, NY – Freshman Ryan DeJohn had his second consecutive season-high kills effort as he led the Roberts Wesleyan University Men's Volleyball team to a key East Coast Conference (ECC) win on the road Friday with a 3-1 victory over Dominican University.
DeJohn finished with 26 kills and had a .321 attack percentage to go along with 10 digs to lead the Redhawks (9-16 overall, 2-2 ECC).
Roberts won the opening set with a 25-23 victory to take the early advantage. Dominican (5-18, 2-2 ECC) rallied for a 26-24 win in the second set to event the score. The Redhawks battled back after having four set points to win a 32-30 third set and then rallied late for a 25-23 win in the fourth set to clinch the victory.
Junior Noah Liousfi and freshman Griffin Monrad had key kills near the end of the first set to help the Redhawks take the early lead. Lioufsi had another kill late in the second set to give Roberts a 24-23 lead but the Chargers rallied to score the final three points to even the match score.
DeJohn shined in the third set and capped the set with a pair of kills in the last four points for the Redhawks as Roberts outlasted Dominican to take the 2-1 edge in the match.
Dominican took an early 8-5 lead in the fourth set but Roberts rallied to tie the score at 13-13 after a pair of kills from sophomore Paul Fillion and another DeJohn kill. The teams traded points until the Chargers surged ahead 21-19 late in the set.
Back-to-back kills by Fillion and DeJohn tied the score at 21-21 and another Fillion kill gave Roberts a 23-22 lead. After an attack error gave the Redhawks a match point situation, the Chargers recorded a kill but a final service error into the net ended the set and match.
DeJohn was the offensive leader for Roberts with his double-double. Fillion added nine kills and a .353 attack percentage and Liousfi added seven kills and a .333 attack percentage.
Freshman Landon Brouwer handed out 47 assists and junior Moises Jimenez had 10 digs for the Redhawks.
Roberts returns to action next Saturday, April 5 with another ECC match at home against St. Thomas Aquinas and will finish the regular season the following Saturday at home against American International.
