ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Roberts Wesleyan University Pole Vault Coordinator
Jenn Suhr was named NCAA Division II East Region Women's Assistant Track Coach of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on Friday.
Suhr, a 2004 Roberts graduate, is in her second season as an assistant coach at her alma mater.
She coached
Brynn King to a second consecutive NCAA Division II Women's Indoor Pole Vault Championship this spring. Sophomore
Sarah Ferguson finished sixth in DII, giving the Roberts women's team two first-team All-Americans. Freshman Austin Melvin finished 10
th on the men's side to earn Second-Team All-America honors.
A three-time Olympian and the 2012 gold medalist, Suhr has led the expansion of the Roberts pole vault program during her tenure. The Redhawks are attracting student-athletes from all over the United States and fielded a team of 15 vaulters this season.
Suhr, who won a silver medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, picked up her first pole at age 22 and went on to win 17 national championships and set 12 American records during her 17-year career.
She won her first U.S. Championship title in 2005, just 10 months after picking up the sport. Suhr is the only vaulter in U.S. track and field history to win three Olympic trials. She still holds the women's world record in the indoor vault (5.03 meters, 16 feet, 6 inches).
A two-sport athlete at Roberts, Suhr scored 1,819 points as a basketball player at Roberts and was the National Christian College Athletic Association National Player of the Year her senior season. Suhr also won national titles in the javelin, 100-meter hurdles and pole vault.
Suhr's husband, Rick, is a volunteer assistant coach for the Redhawks.
