Men’s Lacrosse Drops First ECC Game at No. 14 Mercy

DOBBS FERRY, NY – The Roberts Wesleyan University Men's Lacrosse team fell behind early and could not recover as Mercy University, ranked No. 14 in the country, scored a 16-9 win Saturday in an East Coast Conference (ECC) matchup.

Mercy (5-3 overall, 2-0 ECC) jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the first quarter.

The Redhawks (5-5, 2-1 ECC) scored the first goal of the game as sophomore Ryan Brown scored three minutes into the contest. After a pair of Mercy goals, senior Tyler Clark scored an unassisted goal to tie the score near the midpoint of the period.

Mercy scored four times to end the quarter and added two more goals to start the second quarter before Clark notched his second goal of the game to stop the run. Mercy scored late to take a 9-3 lead into the halftime break.

Roberts started the second half with three straight goals as freshman Cody Coleman, junior Sam Keens and junior Justin Skelly scored to trim the lead to 9-6.

The teams traded goals over the next 18 minutes as Skelly added to his streak with four straight Roberts goals and the Redhawks trailed 12-9 with 7:03 left in the fourth quarter.

Mercy scored the final four goals of the game for the final score.

Skelly led the Redhawks with his four goals and junior Garrett Kayser made 10 saves in the Roberts goal. Junior Isaac Marrero led the team with nine ground balls and fellow junior Liam Linden tied a school record with six caused turnovers to lead the defense.

Roberts returns home for ECC games against Molloy April 12 and D'Youville the following Friday, April 18.
