Defensive Effort Leads Women’s Soccer to Season-Opening Draw

COLUMBUS, OHIO – Sophomore Mia Tyndell finished with seven saves and led a strong defensive effort especially in the second half and closing minutes of the game as the Roberts Wesleyan University Women's Soccer team opened the season with a 1-1 tie at Ohio Dominican University.

Tyndell made five saves in the first half when the Redhawks (0-0-1) were outshot 7-2 but Roberts fell behind as Ohio Dominican scored in the eighth minute to take the early lead.

The 1-0 lead held through the remainder of the first half and into the second period before Roberts knotted the score 15 minutes into the second half.

Senior Alyssa Hackett controlled the ball and made a nice move to get free from the sideline near midfield before sending a long pass toward the corner of the field to fellow senior Cami Brescia.

Brescia beat one defender and dribbled in along the end line before sending a short crossing pass to the mouth of the goal where sophomore Mackenzie Hagen finished the play with a low shot into the empty half of the goal to tie the score at 1-1.

The teams battled back and forth for most of the remainder of the game but Ohio Dominican maintained pressure in the closing minutes with a long free kick from near midfield and a series of throw ins in the offensive half of the field but the Roberts defense stopped every attempt to take a shot in the final three minutes to preserve the tie.

The Redhawks will continue the early-season road trip with a game at Thomas More University Saturday in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
