Volleyball Sweeps Saints for Home Opener Victory

ROCHESTER, NY – In front of a large supportive crowd in the Voller Athletic Center Saturday, junior Griffin Monrad recorded 10 kills, three aces and four blocks to lead the Roberts Wesleyan University Men's Volleyball team to a convincing 3-0 win over D'Youville University in the first home match of the season for the Redhawks.

Roberts (2-0) remained undefeated on the season with a long 33-31 win in the opening set before capping the sweep with set wins of 25-14 and 25-17 for the second straight win over the Saints (0-2). The crowd was boosted by a large contingent of the newly formed Men's Volleyball VIP fan club.

Monrad was the leader of a balanced attack with his team-leading 10 kills and a .318 attack percentage. Sophomore Ryan DeJohn added nine kills and freshman middle Jordan Hoover had eight kills and a .500 percentage. The Redhawks finished the match with 39 kills and just 16 errors for a .267 team attack average.

In the opening set, Hoover, Monrad and DeJohn had kills after the 25-point mark had been reached and DeJohn closed out the set with an ace for the high-scoring 33-31 win.

In the second set, a pair of kills for both DeJohn and junior Paul Fillion in the middle of a 7-1 run early gave Roberts a 13-8 edge.

Hoover and Monrad had aces in a 5-2 run later in the set as the Redhawks took a commanding 21-13 lead before closing out the set with a pair of DeJohn aces and a kill for freshman Jayce Moore.

Roberts took an early 6-1 lead in the third set with two aces by sophomore Landon Brouwer and kills for Hoover and DeJohn.

D'Youville closed the scoring gap to five at 15-10 but a service error, a block by DeJohn and freshman Gavin Terp and two attack errors gave Roberts a 19-10 lead. Hoover and sophomore Andrew Howe added late kills and junior Kaidan Krchniak closed out the match with one final ace. The Redhawks had 13 aces in the match.

Roberts hits the road for the longest trip in school history as the Redhawks travel to Hawaii to face the University of Hawaii Rainbows (ranked No. 2 in the country) for matches Wednesday and Saturday in Manoa, Hawaii.
