BUFFALO, NY – Freshman Savannah Sweet scored one goal and assisted on another to lead the Roberts Wesleyan University Women's Soccer team to a 2-0 victory over D'Youville University Saturday night in an East Coast Conference (ECC) game on Dobson Field.
The win for Roberts (6-2-5 overall, 3-2-1 ECC) moved the Redhawks into second place in the conference standings and kept the all-time unbeaten streak against D'Youville (5-5-1, 3-2-0 ECC) alive. Since the two teams started the series in 2021, Roberts is 9-0-1.
The teams battled to an even first half until the 34th minute when freshman Lauren Schmeelk sent a forward pass to Sweet who sent a shot from the edge of the 18-yard box into the lower corner for the goal and the 1-0 Roberts lead.
Midway through the second half, Sweet broke up a clearing attempt by the Saints and feathered a pass to junior Sam Cipolla who drilled a shot into the open side of the goal to double the lead.
The Roberts defense finished strong to record a third shutout in ECC play this season behind the play of senior goalkeeper Rebecca Hoffman who lead the conference in Goals Against Average and Shutouts and is second in the conference in Save Percentage.
Hoffman finished with eight saves in the shutout win.
The Redhawks will travel to Massachusetts to face No. 4 Ranked Bentley University Wednesday and play Daemen University in a non-conference road game Friday in Amherst.
