PISCATAWAY, NJ – Freshman Raphael Weber had a record-breaking day on the first day of competition for the Roberts Wesleyan University Men's Swimming and Diving team at the Metropolitan Collegiate Championships hosted by Rutgers University in New Jersey.
Weber placed first with a new school record in the 500 freestyle as he raced to a 4:48.63 time. Sophomore Tanner Pinto-Cohn was second with a 4:51.98 and fellow sophomore Derek Woodford placed fourth with his time of 4:58.02.
The three A-Final finishes helped Roberts earn points to take first place in the team standings after the first day. The Redhawks lead the field by more than 100 points with a 460 score. Baruch College is second with 348 points followed by SUNY Maritime, Gordon College, Brooklyn College and Mount St. Mary College.
The 500 free record was not the only record on the night for the Redhawks as Weber led off the 400 Medley Relay to a record-setting time of 3:29.00 as he teamed with freshman Leu Cabanayan, sophomore Antoine Pieterse and sophomore Ethan Springle for another first-place finish for Roberts.
Pieterse added a win in the 200 IM with a time of 1:51.62. Freshman Anthony Merced (6th) and Cabanayan (8th) also raced in the A-Final.
Early in the night, the 200 freestyle relay placed third with freshman Hayden Smith, freshman Jonathan Harvey, Woodford and Springle with a time of 1:29.46.
Smith had the top finish for Roberts in the 50 free with a sixth-place finish in 22.64. Harvey was eighth in 22.89. Springle won the B-Final in 22.39 and senior Dylan Baker was first in the C-Final with his time of 24.05.
Competition continues Saturday and concludes Sunday in New Jersey.
