DOBBS FERRY, NY – A pair of first-half runs gave the Roberts Wesleyan University Men's Basketball team an early lead and the Redhawks finished with a 69-57 victory Saturday in an East Coast Conference (ECC) game on the road.
Junior Khalik Gardner scored 10 of his 12 points in the first half rally as Roberts (3-15 overall, 2-8 ECC) jumped out to the early lead.
The Redhawks has scoring runs of 13-1 early in the period and added another 10-0 run near the end of the half to build an early lead. The scoring coupled with the defensive effort that limited Mercy (2-18, 2-9 ECC) to a season-low 18 first half points gave Roberts a 42-18 lead at the break.
In the second half, junior Collin Woods rallied the Redhawks with nine of his team-leading 13 points as Roberts held off a late comeback effort.
The balanced scoring contributed to the win as eight players scored at least six points in the victory. Woods scored 13, Gardner added 12 and junior Keonjay Carter chipped in eight points. Freshman Jordan Brown and junior Mohamed Soumahoro each scored six points and combined for 17 rebounds.
Freshman Hadi Alshami scored seven points and grabbed seven rebounds while sophomore Zachary Hicks and redshirt freshman Jaden Battle each scored six points.
Roberts continues ECC play Friday at home against Molloy University.
