BROOKLYN, NY – Junior Paul Fillion had a team-leading 18 kills and recorded nine digs for the Roberts Wesleyan University Men's Volleyball team but a fifth-set rally by Long Island University – Brooklyn allowed the Sharks to come away with a 3-2 victory Wednesday afternoon in the second match of a two-match series in Brooklyn.
Roberts (10-9) took an early lead in the match with a 25-21 first set win. LIU (6-9) rallied to win the second and third sets with scores of 25-17 and 25-18 to take a 2-1 lead. The Redhawks evened the score with a 25-20 win in the fourth set.
In the fifth set, the Sharks took an early lead at 5-2 but Roberts used an attack error and a kill by sophomore Ryan DeJohn to even the score at 5-5.
Kills by DeJohn and freshman Jayce Moore evened the score again at 8-8 but LIU scored five consecutive points and six of seven to take a 14-9 lead.
Freshman Jordan Hoover recorded a kill to start a rally as the Redhawks trimmed the lead to 14-12 but the Sharks used a kill to close out the match.
DeJohn finished with 16 kills and Hoover added 11 kills and each had five blocks. Sophomore Landon Brouwer had 49 assists and senior Moises Jimenez led the defense with 12 digs.
The Redhawks return home and will face Judson University Monday with a 5 p.m. match in the Voller Athletic Center.
