AMHERST, N.Y. – The Roberts Wesleyan University men's basketball team has earned the opportunity to make history on Sunday.
The sixth-seeded Redhawks continued their postseason magic by using a late run to pull away from No. 2 Saint Thomas Aquinas College 76-62 in the East Coast Conference semifinals on Saturday night at Daemen University's Lumsden Gymnasium.
Junior guard
Collin Woods scored 18 points to lead Roberts (10-16) into the ECC title game for the first time in program history. The surging Redhawks, who have won seven of their last nine games, will play top-seeded Daemen, the fourth-ranked Division II team in the nation, at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. The winner receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Championship.
Keonjay Carter added 17 points and
Jordan Brown added 14 points and five assists for the Redhawks.
Roberts led 49-48 with 8:28 to play before freshman
Jaden Lee ignited a 10-0 run with a three-pointer from the right corner.
Khalik Gardner, who scored 13 points, made a pair of free throws before Carter drained a three.
Zachary Hicks capped the flurry with a follow-up slam to make it 59-48 with 6:13 to go.
Roberts, which made 20 of 23 free throws in the second half made 13 attempts from the stripe in the final 5:27 to extend its advantage. Brown went a perfect 8-for-8 from the line, while Gardner made four steals.
Mohamed Soumahoro led Roberts with eight rebounds. Roberts held a 43-33 advantage on the boards and outscored STAC 22-9 in the paint while avenging a pair of regular-season losses.
Roberts led for 35:45 of game time and built a 31-23 advantage at the half behind 14 points by Woods and 10 from Carter.
