ROME, Ga. – Roberts Wesleyan track & field opened the NCCAA National Championships on Friday with several strong performances.

On the men's side,
Malcolm Shaw won the javelin with an impressive throw of 62.80m, which is just shy of his program record distance of 63.59m.

The women's team were led by sprinters
Chelsea Hayward and
Kathleen Amstad, who each surpassed the program record in the 200m prelims. Both will advance to the finals as Hayward recorded the third fastest time (24.62) while Amstad posted the fifth best time (24.73).

The 4x100m relay team also advanced to the finals after recording the second fastest time of 47.26 seconds, which broke the program record time of 47.62.

Also advancing to the finals was
Brianna Calderon as she placed second in the second heat of the 400m hurdles prelims with a time of 1:05.61. That time is third all-time in the program record book.

Other notable finishers included
April Sablan in the 10,000m as she placed third with a time of 38.34.83 to earn six points for the Redhawks. Her performance places her fifth all-time in program history.

In the men's 400m prelims, freshman
Parris Strickland missed out on advancing to the finals as he took fourth in his heat with a time of 50.52.
