Erie, Pa. - The Roberts Wesleyan men's tennis team was defeated 9-0 by the nationally ranked Edinboro Fighting Scots in a match played at the Westwood Racquet Club in Erie, Pa.
"All the matches were close and this may have been the best team effort of the year," said head coach
Tom Linhart. "We played with high energy and focus. We were willing to grind out points and handled the intensity of the match very well. This kind of effort is what we have been working for and will serve us well in the upcoming matches."
Four of the matches went down to the wire, three being decided by tiebreakers. At second doubles, freshmen
Dennis Barlotta and
Paul Langbroek lost 9-8 to Daniel Fernandez and Kevin Mboko. Langbroek later was involved in a close match with Mauricio Santos, losing 7-6(4) and 6-4.
In other singles matches, junior
Jose Carrillo lost a heartbreaker at No. 5 singles to Mboko 6-7(4) 6-3 and 11-9 in the tiebreaker. The match at No. 6 singles also went down to the wire with freshman Matthew Cruz also losing in a tiebreaker, 2-6, 6-2, 10-2 to freshman Kolja Hein.
The 9-3 Redhawks return to action Sunday, March 5th against Post University in a key match between regionally ranked reams. The match will be played at 4 p.m. at Midtown Athletic Club in Rochester.
