SCHENECTADY, NY – Freshman Antonie Pieterse broke three Roberts Wesleyan University school records on the first day of the season as the Redhawks traveled to Union College and finished with a season-opening 136-88 win.
Pieterse won three events with school-record times in each victory. He started the night with a record time of 1:58.44 in the 200 IM and later swam a record time of 58.63 in the 100 butterfly before end the night with a 53.23 time in the 100 backstroke to set another school record.
It was not the only big finishes in the opening meet as senior William Rugaber won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events, freshman Derek Woodford won the 1000 freestyle and junior Tommy Booth was the top finisher in the 100 breaststroke.
Rugaber had winning scores of 239.33 on the 3-meter board and 243.45 on the 1-meter board for the Redhawks.
Woodford clocked an 11:10.47 top win the distance freestyle race and Booth posted a winning time of 1:03.59 in the 100 breast.
The best race of the night came at the end of the meet as the 200 freestyle relay with sophomore Brodyn Baldwin, Woodford, senior Ronald Pasieka and junior Andon Fedor out-touched Union with a time of 1:36.77 to win the final event of the night by just .04 of a second.
"I am so proud of how strong the team started this season off," said Head Coach Sara Smith. "The athletes have been training hard in the pool and on the boards, and we were itching to compete. From the first race of the day all the way to the last, I was just so proud of the effort and seeing lifetime bests and team records mingled into meet one of the year. It gives me a lot of confidence that we will see exceptional growth in the team and athletes this season."
Other top finishes came in the 200 medley relay to start the meet as sophomore Avery Fedor, sophomore Jon Spencer, Andon Fedor and sophomore Aiden Soggs clocked a 1:49.54 to place second. In the 100 free freshman Tanner Pinto-Cohn (52.46) and Baldwin (55.99) finished second and third respectively.
Pinto-Cohn added a second-place finish in the 500 free with a time of 5:30.93.
The swimmer and divers are off until October 26 when the Redhawks open the home portion of the season schedule with a dual meet against Hobart.
