Redhawks Extend ECC Title Run To 10

Kylee Odell won the ECC championship
AMHERST, N.Y. – There was a moment early in Saturday's East Coast Conference Championship that Roberts Wesleyan University Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Andrew Dorr was concerned that the women's race might not go the Redhawks' way.

That concern did not last long.

Roberts' runners, led by senior Kylee Odell and junior Rachel Horner-Richardson, rallied in the final two kilometers to secure the Redhawks 10th straight ECC Championship at Bassett Park. Roberts finished with 30 points, followed by runner-up Daemen with 52 and Molloy with 77.

"I gave them all a job to do and for the first half of the race they executed it to perfection," Dorr said. "Then, they had enough gas in the tank to get the job done."

Odell finished first, covering the 5K course at Bassett Park in 18:22, to lead four Redhawks in the top five. Horner-Richardson (18:24.9) placed second for the second consecutive season while junior Lydia Roselund finished fourth (18:39.3) and freshman Paige Reeser took fifth (18:42.5). Freshman Evelyn Schmit (19:56.0) finished 18th to round out the top five for Roberts.

"We knew that we had a strong top four and they needed to deliver at a high level," Dorr said. "As long as Evelyn was able to stay in contact with Daemen's five and six runners we were going to be OK."

The victory earned Odell ECC Runner of the Year honors while Horner-Richardson, Roselund and Reeser all made first-team All-ECC honors. Reeser was also named the ECC Rookie of the Year.

Other top finishers for Roberts were Gianna Tribotte (20th in 20:09.4), freshman Kennedy Mitchell (25th in 20:24.9) and Trista Webster (26th in 20:39.6).

Dorr took a moment after the race to reflect on extending the streak to double digits.

"It means that we feel confident in a system that works for us, so we are going to keep doing what we are doing," Dorr said.

The Redhawks will host the NCAA Division II East Region Championships on Nov. 9.
