PISCATAWAY, NJ – Senior Mya Webb set the Roberts Wesleyan University record in the 50 Free and junior Joane Arzalluz Garzon took down the school record in the 200 Individual Medley to lead the Women's Swimming and Diving team on the first day of competition at the Metropolitan Conference Championships in New Jersey.
Webb won the 50 Freestyle race with a blazing 23.86 time for the school record.
Shortly before the 50 Free record, Garzon raced to a second-place finish in the IM race and established a new school record with her time of 2:17.94. Freshman Paige Kern took seventh in the race with her time of 2:35.69.
Garzon swan the lead leg of the 200 Freestyle Relay that took second place as sophomore Juliana French, freshman Cara Pillittieri and Webb clocked a time of 1:43.17 in the first event of the finals session.
Roberts had three swimmers in the 500 Freestyle A-Final as Pillittieri won the race with her time of 5:25.65, sophomore Haley Welch was fourth in 5:50.91 and French was eighth in 6:13.42 for the Redhawks.
Kern led off the 400 Medley Relay for Roberts as she teamed with sophomore Leanne Dolph, Welch and French to place third with a time of 4:47.13.
After the first day, Roberts leads the team scoring with 297 points. Baruch College (293 points) is second followed by Mount Saint Mary (236), Sarah Lawrence (205), Gordon College (194), Hunter College (170), John Jay College (145), Brooklyn College (138) and SUNY Maritime (26).
Competition continues Saturday morning with the preliminary round and finals starting at 5:30 p.m.
