ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Defending women's pole vault champion
Brynn King and freshman thrower
Thomas McConnelee lead a list of five Roberts Wesleyan University student-athletes who have qualified for the NCAA Division II Track and Field Outdoor Championships next week in Pueblo, Colo.
King, a graduate student, broke her own NCAA Division II Outdoor record earlier this season by clearing 4.76 meters (15-feet, 7-inches) at the 97
th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on March 29.
King, a three-time NCAA Division II champion for Roberts is seeded first in the field of 22 and will compete at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 24.
King will be joined in Colorado by fellow vaulters sophomore
Sarah Ferguson, freshman
Karis Kraf and freshman
Austin Melvin.
Ferguson, who set a personal best of 4.18m (13-8½) while winning the St. John Fisher Invitational is seeded seventh. The sophomore placed sixth at the DII Indoor Championships and was named a first-team All-American.
Kraf cleared 3.96 meters (12-feet, 11-inches) to finish second at the East Coast Conference championships and secure a trip to nationals. She is seeded 18
th in the field.
McConnelee, who owns school records in the discus (56.16m/184-3) and hammer throw (61.67m/202-4) qualified in both events. The freshman is seeded 11
th in the hammer throw, which will be contested on May 22, and fifth in the discus, which will be contested on May 23.
Melvin opened the season by setting a school record of 5.10m (16-8¾) at the Redhawk Invitational on March 19 and qualified in the men's pole vault. Melvin earned second-team All-America after finishing 10
th at the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships and is seeded 13
th for the Outdoor competition which takes place on May 22 at the CSU Pueblo Thunderbowl.
