The East Coast Conference has announced its Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as well as the Scholar-Athletes of the Year for each of its championship sports for the 2024-25 campaign, it was announced on Monday. Molloy baseball senior Sean Welsh and Roberts Wesleyan women's track & field graduate student Brynn King (The Woodlands, TX) headlined the list of award winners as this year's overall ECC Male and Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
All nine of the ECC's core member institutions were represented, led by Molloy (3) and Roberts Wesleyan (3), followed by Mercy (2), Queens (2), and Staten Island (2), and including Daemen (1), District of Columbia (1), D'Youville (1), and St. Thomas Aquinas (1). Associate indoor track and field member Holy Family (2) and associate women's bowling member Kutztown (1) also made the list.
The epitome of an ECC student-athlete, the unanimous ECC Outdoor Track & Field Female Athlete of the Year King holds a 3.85 GPA in RWU's strategic leadership graduate program, finished her undergraduate work in exercise science with a perfect 4.0 GPA and represented the conference at the highest stage this spring, becoming the NCAA National Champion in the pole vault with a mark of 4.52m (14' 10"). King enjoyed an undefeated season with four wins in four opportunities, including a historic performance at the 97th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in which she broke the all-time NCAA outdoor record in the pole vault 4.75m (15' 7").
King, who represented the United States of America last summer at the 2024 Paris Olympics, is now a four-time NCAA Division II champion (two indoor, two outdoor) and is the only woman in Division II history to surpass 15 feet in the pole vault. King repeated as the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division II East Region Women's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year and most recently received the Rich Funke Jr./Jerry Flynn Local College Athlete of the Year Award from the Rochester Press-Radio Club on June 10.
Welsh and King were also named the Scholar-Athlete of the Year for their respective sports.
All ECC Scholar-Athlete of the Year recipients hold at least a 3.30 GPA, are a starter or key reserve, and have reached at least sophomore standing both athletically and academically.
