BROCKPORT, NY – Sophomore Austin Melvin became the first vaulter in school history to clear the 17-foot mark as he broke the school record and led the Roberts Wesleyan University Men's Track and Field team at the Brockport Rust Buster meet to open the second semester of competition.
Melvin passed to the 4.75-meter bar and cleared five consecutive bars and cleared the 5.18 meters (17' 0") on his first attempt to break the school record.
He led four Redhawks in the top five places in the event as sophomore Terron Metz placed second with a finish of 4.85 meters (15' 11"), freshman Noah Leathersich was third at 4.75 meters (15' 7") and sophomore Chase McFadden was fifth at 4.45 meters (14' 7 ¼").
Senior Jackson Doran added a first-place finish in the 3K race as he paced the field with a winning time of 8:49.43. He added a fifth-place finish in the 800-meter race with a time of 1:59.15.
Sophomore Owen Callahan was third in the weight throw with a heave of 15.63 meters (51' 3") which ranks second on the all-time top-five list at Roberts.
A pair of relays finished well for the Redhawks in the 4x400. Freshman Josiah Rodriguez, freshman Tyler Klawon, sophomore Aiden McDonald and freshman Roman Smith placed fourth with a time of 3:52.49 and the team of senior Micah Cornfield, sophomore Andrew O'Dell, sophomore Boston Dues and sophomore Juvenal Diaz-Cortes finished in fifth one second behind in 3:53.77.
Next up for Roberts is the RIT Friday Night Meet January 23.
