ROCHESTER, NY – A great team effort came up just one point shy of the East Coast Conference (ECC) Outdoor Track and Field team title Thursday as the Redhawks battled with St. Thomas Aquinas College all day for the top spot at Roberts Stadium.
St. Thomas Aquinas took the narrow victory with 195 points as Roberts finished with 194 points. Molloy University (117 points) was third followed by Daemen University (74), the College of Staten Island (44) and Queens College (24).
The Redhawks were led by six first-place finishers as sophomore Calvin Lill won the High Jump, sophomore Austin Melvin won the Pole Vault, graduate student Jackson Doran won the 800 meters, sophomore Charles Matzke won the 3K Steeple Chase, senior Ethan LeClair won the Javelin and sophomore Owen Callahan won the Hammer Throw to lead Roberts.
Lill won the High Jump with a height of 1.88 meters (6' 2") and sophomore Diego Arellano Jasso was second at 1.83 meters (6' 0").
Melvin won the Pole Vault with a height of 5.02 meters (16' 5 ½") while sophomore Jordan Bryner was second followed by freshman Noah Leathersich, freshman Luke Martinez, sophomore Terron Metz, sophomore Chase McFadden, sophomore Thomas Acosta and freshman Owen Johnson foo third through eighth for the Redhawks.
Callahan was first in the Hammer with a distance of 53.71 meters (176' 2") and was third in the Shot Put with a heave of 13.77 meters (45' 2 ¼"). In the Hammer, freshman William Miller was fourth and LeClair was fifth. Miller was also second in the Discus Throw with his mark of 42.35 meters (138' 11").
Matzke led five runners to the top six spots in the Steeple Chase as sophomore Owen Tarolli was second, sophomore Hunter Himebaugh was third, junior Russell Mulley was fifth and Eli Williams was sixth for Roberts.
Doran was the top finisher in the 800 with a time of 1:56.94 and freshman Roman Smith took third with his time of 1:59.27.
Matzke raced with freshman Joel Amstutz, sophomore Jakob Zibbel and sophomore Trevor Heitkamp to place second in the 4x800 relay with a time of 8:26.70.
Zibbel added a second-place finish in the 1500 with Amstutz taking fourth and sophomore Andrew O'Dell finishing fifth for Roberts.
Arellano Jasso added a third-place finish in the 110-meter Hurdles with a 15.89 time as freshman Noah Schales was fifth and added a sixth in the 400 hurdles.
