Two School Records for Men’s Track and Field at Season Opener

ROCHESTER, NY – Freshmen Thomas McConnelee and Austin Melvin each set school records to lead the Roberts Wesleyan University Men's Track and Field team at the season-opening Redhawks Invitational meet Wednesday afternoon at Roberts Stadium.

McConnelee broke the discus school record set in 2006 on his first throw of the season as he uncorked a toss of 53.94 meters (177' 0") and then improved the record on his third throw with a 54.67-meter (179' 4") throw to win the event. The old record was set by Nick Kahanic with his 170' 3" throw in 2006.

Melvin jumped into the competition at 4.78 meters (15' 8 ¼") and nailed his first three bars including the school-record of 5.10 meters (16' 8 ¾") on his third attempt of the day to win the competition.

The Redhawks had four addition first-place finishers as freshman Jakob Zibbel won the 1500 meters run to start the running events as he clocked a winning time of 4:09.27. Senior Jackson Doran won the 800-meters race with a time of 1:54.78 and then anchored the winning 4x400 relay as he teamed with freshman Boston Dues, senior Zachary Hall and freshman Diego Arellano Jasso for a first-place time of 3:37.77.

Sophomore Vincent Ciraolo posted the victory in the 3K race as he crossed the finish line first in 9:22.43.

Arellano Jasso added a second-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles with a 17.27 while freshman Jaden Simmons was second in the 200-meters with a time of 22.83 and third in the 400 with a time of 52.35.

Simmons was also the anchor leg of the second-place 4x400 relay as he teamed with Zibbel, freshman Trevor Heitkamp and senior Patrick Martin.

Freshman Chase McFadden, junior Corden Zimmerman and freshman Therron Percival finished 2-3-4 in the pole vault. Zimmerman added a second-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 46.08 meters (151' 2").

Freshman Charles Matzke was second in the 3K (9:27.31) and fellow freshman Calvin Lill was second in the long jump with a leap of 6.12 meters (20' 1").

The Redhawks compete a week from Saturday at the Bill Quinlisk Invitational at RIT.
