ROME, Ga. (May 2, 2015) – The Roberts Wesleyan Track & Field teams had a successful weekend as they came home from the NCCAA National Championships with an individual  national champion, 13 All-Americans and three school records.Â
The Men's team placed sixth overall while the Women's side took 10th.
Sophomore thrower, Malcolm Shaw, took home the individual national title in the Javelin on his sixth and final throw with a distance of 54.00m.
To earn All-American status, a student-athlete must place in the top-three in their respective event.
On the Men's side
Thomas Rodger placed second in the 1,500m (3:56.63) as
Keith Pease (3:57.60) followed right behind.
Kevin Brown, a senior, took second in the 3,000m Steeplechase (9:16.96) while meeting the NCAA Division II provisional standard.Â
Senior sprinter/jumper,
Gabe Rivera competed in his first-ever Decathlon, placing third overall with 5,810 points while ranking him third all-time in the program record books.
In perhaps one of the most exciting races of the meet, the Men's 4x800m Relay team (
Aaron Bellomo, Pease,
Justin Bender, and Rodger) ran an incredible time of 7:39.14 (average splits of 1:54.78) to finish in second place. That time is the second fastest time in school history, only being outdone by the 1994 team with a time of 7:34.49.
For the Women's team, senior
Rachel Hust had the best performance of the meet as she ran the lead-off leg of the 4x800m Relay which placed second and set a new school record with a time of 9:15.32. Other members of the tem were
Rachel Hutchinson, Liz Valento and
Rachel Prutsman).Â
In Hust's next event, the 1,500m, she took third place by setting another school record and making the NCAA Division II provisional standard and is currently ranked 28
th in the division. In her last event, Hust placed fourth in the 800m with a time of 2:15.01.Â
Fellow senior Rachel Brush ran her best 3,000m Steeplechase race (11:29.89) while placing second overall as sophomore
April Sablan did the same in the 5,000m (18:10.19).Â
Other notable women's performances included
Chelsea Hayward, who set a school record in the 200m (25.09) with a fifth place finish while also taking seventh in the 100m (12.48).Â
Brianna Calderon was sixth in the 400IH with a personal best time and second all-time mark in the program record book with a time of 1:05.73.Â
Notables for the men's side included Bellomo, who finishing fourth in the 1,500 (3:58.75), Bender taking fifth in the 3,000m Steeplechase (9:25.93),
Aaron McGinnis and
Mitchell Jurius placed seventh the Long Jump (6.75m) and Javelin (45.20m) respectively.
The meet closed out the season, capping off a successful year as the two teams won the East Coast Conference championships while setting six new school records.
