ROCHESTER, N.Y. (February 5, 2015) – According to the East Coast Conference Women's Lacrosse Poll, Roberts Wesleyan is predicted to finish sixth in the final standings this season.
Roberts Wesleyan picked up 42 points, just five points behind fifth place Mercy, a team that the Redhawks downed 10-6 in their season finale in 2014.
Dowling and LIU Post were tied for first in the poll, which is voted on by the league's coaches. Both teams each gained 76 total points; however Dowling has the slight edge with five first place votes compared to LIU Post's four.
The Golden Lions also swept the individual preseason awards this year as senior attacker Jackie Anderson was named Preseason Offensive Player of the Year while junior defender Emma Ferreira was voted Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
The Redhawks, who finished 7-10 overall and 4-4 in conference play last season, return a majority of their line-up from last season. Among the returners is sophomore
Cassley Jackowski. The attacker set a program record in her debut season with 82 points (62 goals, 20 assists).
The team also returns
Ali Fox, who was second on the team in with 44 points (29 goals, 15 assists) and
Loren Dunn, who was fourth with 29 points (27 goals, 2 assists).
The Redhawks are guided by head coach Kate Segdwick, who is entering her second year with the program that is beginning its fourth season.
Roberts Wesleyan opens the season in southern Florida when they take on first-year program Florida Tech on February 16 in Melbourne, Fla. before taking on Saint Leo two days later.
The home opener for the Redhawks is February 28 when they entertain Slippery Rock (Pa.) at noon.
